A Long Year...

It has been a long year, but the boyz have gotten some experience. I've spent the morning looking at their results for the year and realized everyone has ridden well over thirty races this year that have been active. Though I know that it has been a frustrating year for all of them, the all have earned their place in Iowa's category I/II peleton. Bryan Moritz has had 10 second place finishes in his first year as a category two cyclist as well as two collegiate wins. Will Greenwood has won a race at State Center in June and contributed to many team finishes... Andrew Fagersten had an extremely frustrating year due to an injury after mountain bike accident which was further aggrevated by his determination to finish the Joe Martin stage race. He is a horse and has come back to form in the last month finishing third in our team Criterium and the Iowa Games road race both the same weekend. Finn Kohlsrud capitalized on his ability to finish fast by finishing third at the Clear Lake road race this year. Last but certainly not least of the riders is Tim Campbell who has not only logged the most races (including his man collegiate events) this year is our tough guy for the year. He is always willing to attack and once he's reeled in he's ready to attack again. One of these days he's going to stick the long solo break and nobody will be able to stop him. He almost did it at Clear Lake Road Race. Keep your eyes open our for these guys next year. They will be the new guard of Iowa Cycling... the forty plus age group riders days are numbered. I for one am grateful to have been able to work with these guys and be their friend. My hope for Iowa Cycling's future is bright and will be driving back to the state frequently next year to watch them continue to grow as riders and men. Thanks guys... you are no longer boyz!

P.S. Craig and I are looking forward to adding more young riders to the team next year!

Finchford Roubiax

This past weekend, a few of us raced at Finchford Roubaix over by Cedar Falls...Tracy, Finn, Will, Sean, Bryan, and Lee (not pictured).
The race was on a 5 mile loop for a total of 50 miles. The race started out pretty fast with lots of attacks going.Eventually on the 3rd lap, Bryan went on the attack after one of Sean's attacks was brought back in. Only Clark Priebe, Jarod Osterloh (All 9 Yards) and Paul Deninger (Zoom) went with and that was pretty much the break that would stay away.

Then with about a lap and a half to go, Sean bridged up solo! With two B2U/WOB guys in the group of 5, the attacks started coming from the other 3 riders. Bryan and Sean managed to follow the attacks and eventually Bryan launched off and only Priebe came with about 6 miles to the finish. With Sean sitting on Jarod and Paul's wheel, Bryan and Clark started working together and were able to stick the break.

In the end, Priebe had a little bit more left so Bryan rolled in taking 2nd place. Then in the next group, Sean (after bridging up solo the previous lap) came in for 4th place just behind Jarod.

Overall a great race for the team with two B2U/WOB riders landing in the top 5.

Winona Road Race

Yesterday I threw down in a local 65 mile RR so that I could represent the B2U/WOB shops here in Indiana. After the performance I am positive people will be making the trip to Iowa to patronize the shops. Anyway, the field of about 40 guys had some good teams in it - Texas Road House, Alderfer Bergen (the team is stacked with a lot of dudes from my collegiate conference and Indiana University...IU has a wealth of fast dudes), and some guys from the Bissel club team. The field also had some solo guys that had been hauling me around the midwest during the collegiate season. I didn't have high hopes going in, being that I was flying solo, but a guy can't win if he doesn't try.

To spare everyone the gory details, a break went from the field early in the race, and then halfway through the race a chase group, including me, took off from the field. The chase of 10 was powered by the Bissel and Road House teams. We (and by we, I mean them) shut the gap down from 2 minutes to about 30 seconds, and then the cat and mousing/fireworks started to happen. Bissel and Road House ended up getting guys up the road, along with a few crazy strong guys from other teams. That left me to chase the last 5 miles with 6 guys on my wheel. No one would work with me since they had teammates up the road or were "too tired", and I didn't want to sit up as it would let a lot of guys get back into the race, potentially pushing me out of the money. So, I put the hammer down and hauled into the finish. Somehow (perhaps by the grace of all performance enhancing drugs I've been injecting?) I rode 5 of the guys off my wheel before the finished. That left one Road House guy on my wheel that routinely houses me at collegiate races. I opened up my sprint late since it seemed he wasn't going to come around until I went. The powersticks almost came through, as I was edged out by only half a wheel (when I was expecting to get absolutely wasted) for 8th place.

All things considered, I'll take an 8th place. It felt really good, especially riding everyone off my wheel the last five miles. It made me feel like I was good or something. Next up Joe Martin...woo hoo! Thanks for reading...

Easter Weekend Training Pictures

Saturday the 11th of April...
B2U and a few other Iowa City riders embarked on a training ride in Iowa City. We covered 80 miles alittle less than four hours with an average speed of twenty two mph. There was lots of 'stop ahead sign' sprint action and escheloning. It was good to get a ride in with Tim Campbell, our new team member, as well as his brother Nick and to meet his girlfriend, Jen, who's pretty tough too.

Dirty Road Race

Alrighty, this past weekend Andrew, Brian, Sean, Lee and I decided to participate in the Dirty Road Race. This was decided after a slew of phone calls the night before. It was cold and rainy, which equals lots of fun. The race started neutral until some point, it really wasn't clear. On the roads I made a small attack right away, then Lee. after a few minutes there was a group ahead with Sean and some A9Y guys. Andrew was in the middle trying to bridge, so I came out of the group and joined Andrew. Luckly for us there wasn't any clear markings on the course on when to turn and we missed the turn onto gravel. We doubled back and chased and chased and chased. Lee waited for us and helped us through the muck. We were picking off riders one by one. The start of the second lap Lee was toasted with freezing feet. Andrew and I caught up to Kim West, who convienently led us on another wrong turn. At this point Sean and Jared were off the front together and Brian was in the main pack(of like 4 other riders). Sean and Jared took a wrong turn and cut five miles of the course, what a tactic. Kim West eventually dropped out of the race and Andrew and I finished 5 and 6. I would note that we saw Lane on the course and he looked as if he was about to pass out. In the end Sean and Jared were DQed and Brian finished 2nd overall. After the race we went to Pizza Ranch and had a great time.

WEEKEND TRAINING CAMP

This past weekend B2U/WOB Racing Squad got together in Iowa city and Cedar Falls for an intense couple of days of training. There were no pictures from the camp as it was closed to the media. It wasn't all fun and games for B2U/WOB this weekend, as Finn stated

"I think that was one of the hardest 25 miles of my life."

True he may have been speaking about trying to hold a conversation over Bryan's blaring Pantera music while on the road, but the riding was difficult as well. It was fun to get some of the team together since we don't get to see all of them as much in the off season.

This upcoming weekend a large bunch of B2U/WOB will be attending the 2 gravel road races and would like to welcome all riders to come on out.

"see you guys saturday morning in mitchellville." -bryan

It is our hope that training is going well for all, and B2U/WOB racers are all getting very excited for Kent Park to Kick off the Season.

The BikesToYou/World of Bikes racing team of '09 is now officially part of the blogger world.
A young competitive racing squad proudly Co-Sponsored by Bikes To You and World of Bikes. The team consists of nine Category 1/2 riders from Iowa whom have a passion for the sport of cycling.
The singular purpose of the Bikes To You Cycling Team is quite simply to make bike racing more accessible for younger generations and to facilitate their improvement in the sport through a positive, team focused racing environment. In a short period of time we have garnered a reputation for being a positive group of bike racers, who would rather race aggressive and lose than not have an impact on the race. In the future we hope to expand our team to include younger riders, however, at this time riders under the age of 20 don’t exist in Iowa, and we feel that by establishing a core group of riders with a positive reputation for developing riders, that we will be able to excite younger kids to give our sport a try.
In one year we have put together a squad of four master’s level racers with decades of both national and international racing experience, who have a passion for the development of an age group of bike racers that is notably absent in the Midwest. In the 2008 season, we fostered the development of 5 racers between the ages of 21-24, and facilitated a fun, positive demeanor within this squad. We are not focused solely on winning, as some of our proudest moments this past season came during events where we played a pivotal role in the race through the execution of positive racing tactics, without winning the event. We are proud of the fact that all 5 of our younger guys not only won a race in 2008 but have received upgrades within the USA Cycling categorization system to the elite Category 2 level.
